Underpinning for World Trade Centre Singapore
Project Overview :
During the construction of Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, designed to connect key areas across the island, a new MRT station was planned beneath the World Trade Centre.
Technical background
To enable the construction of the station and its associated tunnels, the existing piles supporting the building needed to be removed. This required the installation of new piles and the careful transfer of the building’s load onto these new supports to create the necessary space.
Our Solution
In partnership with engineering teams, YIPU designed and delivered an advanced hydraulic underpinning system to facilitate this complex operation. The system featured four 300-ton single-acting lock nut jacks per lifting cluster, with each cluster capable of handling a 1,200-ton load. A total of 16 such jacks were deployed across the project.
Throughout the load transfer process, both the transferred load and any settlements were meticulously monitored to ensure a seamless and safe transition, maintaining the structural integrity of the World Trade Centre.
