Gardens By the Bay Sun Tracking and Shielding System

Project Overview :

Gardens By the Bay, a world-renowned attraction in Singapore, is a cornerstone of the nation’s vision to become a “City in a Garden.” This iconic destination showcases horticultural and garden artistry, presenting the plant kingdom in an innovative and immersive way.

Technical background

The gardens feature two remarkable glass-domed greenhouses: the “Cloud Forest” and the “Flower Dome.” These structures replicate the cool, humid conditions of tropical mountainous regions and the cool, dry climates of Mediterranean, semi-arid, and subtropical regions, respectively, preserving some of the world’s most threatened plant species. Both greenhouses exemplify sustainable engineering, incorporating advanced technologies to deliver energy-efficient climate control solutions.

Our Solution

A key innovation is the sun tracking and shielding system, designed to optimize environmental conditions within the greenhouses. This system dynamically adjusts 223 independently operated opaque membranes installed above the glass roofs, automatically opening and closing in response to changes in sunlight angle and internal temperature throughout the day.

YIPU designed and delivered an intelligent control system that enables each membrane to operate independently, guided by real-time data on solar position and greenhouse temperature requirements. Managed from a central control center, this sophisticated system ensures precise and adaptive climate regulation, enhancing energy efficiency and plant preservation.
